'Franklins Christmas Gift' by Paulette Bourgeois & Brenda Clark is a picture book which captures the Christmas spirit of ‘giving ‘rather than ‘receiving’. See Franklin, pressured by his peers in donating something to the local Christmas present drive, can’t comprehend giving something away from his beloved toy chest. However through the story Franklin realises that the spirit of Christmas is not essentially receiving gifts, it is giving them. This underlying message allows Franklin to part ways with a favoured toy, which allows him to feel like he has contributed in making someone’s Christmas more fulfilling. This message is illustrated through a string of descriptive pictures which easily represent Franklin’s emotions, to young readers.
