Joel Blackie - 'You and Me: Our Place'

You and Me: Our Place written by Leonie Norrington and illustrated by Dee Huxley is a colourful visual and written journey through cultural appreciation and change. The story relies heavily on visual imagery to express the messages explored within the book (beautifully drawn people from different cultures and backdrops show the action) and is complimented with appropriate guided language choices that allow the reader to delve deeper into the books underlying themes ("The bridge catches the water and keeps us dry" - a visual image of people escaping the rain underneath a bridge, not one without a smile on their face).

The book explores the theme of multiculturalism and the interrelationship between different cultures and between people young and old. A particularly interesting feature is how the story itself when expressed through visual imagery alone, reaches the same conclusions in the readers mind.

I quite enjoyed this book and would most certainly use the text in a classroom situation.

Joel Blackie.
