Novel - “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne
Collins
The novel “The Hunger Games”, written by
Suzanne Collins has caused much controversy in today’s society as it can cause
interesting discussions about our own world and how threats of war,
authoritarian governments, reality shows and the obsession with various trends
can influence us on a daily basis. The story begins with two representatives
from twelve districts are required by the government in the Capitol who are the
rulers of each district to send them to participate in the Hunger Games. The
Hunger Games is televised battle involving these 24 representatives who must
battle each other to the death, until there is one survivor remaining.
I believe this book would be suitable for
children aged 15 and above as it contains strong emotions and violence that younger
students may find disturbing. I believe this novel contains numerous discussion
points, not only about sacrifice, personal freedom, and governments, but it can
also lead to discussion about what it means to be your own person and not give
in to the trends of today’s society’s expectations.
