'Girl Underground' by Morris Gleitzman

In conjunction with the novel 'Boy Overboard', Morris Gleitzman also released 'Girl Underground' which somewhat continues Jamal and Bibi’s story. However, this time the children are pen pals in a detention centre with an Australian adolescent named Bridget White.
The Novel ‘Girl Underground’ depicts the journey of the adolescent Bridget who is facing an identity crisis until she meets Menzies the son of a Federal Minister for National Development. However, Menzies is rebellious towards his father’s beliefs and sees refugee detention centres as unjust. This is where the pen pal relationship with the seized Jamal takes off. This allows Bridget and Menzies to identify the Jamal's unwarranted detainment, taking the issue further by confronting the Prime Minister. However, publicity received after confronting the Prime Minister, forces Bridget into another identity crisis due to her family running an illegal business. This publicity puts Bridget and Menzies’ “free the refugees” campaign into turmoil. As Jamal and Bibi have no hope of being released from detention, Bridget and Menzies then devise another plan, which requires the digging of a tunnel into the centre, which would allow them to sneak the detained children out.
